 Dear friends,

beginning August I decided to open a new page on Facebook about my professional profile. I did it for 2 reasons the first is that not all of you or others go look around on Linkedin where I have already my professional profile, the second is because many of you ask me if I am still a car designer or other infos regarding my professional experiences.

This is normal, I write a lot about advices and tips on car design education and for some of you it is not so easy to know more about me. So who am I?

Now a new page on Facebook is open with some detailed infos about me, some links of interviews I had the pleasure to have, articles I wrote published on other sites and also photos about me on the job (naturally only stuff legally publishable) and some of my old sketches.
You will also find infos about my old design school activities as teacher and latest workshops I did.

I hope you like this initiative and I really hope you will all become fans of this page and that you will spread the word to collect as many fans as possible :)

Architecture: my visit to Maison Louis Carré by Alvar Aalto

 Dear friends,

today I would like to tell you about my visit to the "Maison Louis Carré" designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto in 1959 Bazoches sur Guyonne France.
This wonderful piece of contemporary Art and architecture is the only French house of the author remained and today is owned by Alvar Aalto Association which is restoring it.

Why do I talk to you about this visit? Simply because visiting this fantastic designed house I felt like traveling inside the designer's creativity, in a few words I got the right emotional feeling of what it is to sketch - design - realize a complicated beautiful project just like when we start a new interior or exterior car project.

Maison Louis Carré has been designed in every single detail following a a clear concept and design philosophy. Every lamp, every door nob, every shader, all bathrooms details, all kitchen architectural elements, every window frame and handle, fire place details, all materials and furniture. Everything has been designed and realized to achieve the final masterpiece in all its full manifestation.

 The visit was guided and the story told, while waking slowly, made me feel and imagine the people living there during their everyday life. Louis Carré in 1956 wanted to have a house in that place of France (Bazoches sur Guyonne) and choose architect Alvar Aalto because he was a bit scared of Le Corbusier's concrete style. Alvar Aalto will design a modern warm functional house that became a monument to Art and Design.


Materials, the use of wood.
Alvar Aalto had the capacity to put together several materials in a very wise way. For example the tipical white walls construction married with a good balance of light warm wood.This perfect balance gives a soul to this house, once visited it looks like we lived there since long time...it feels like we could live there watching the big garden from living room windows or entering in the private studio with a great bookshelf biblioteque style full of old precious books.
We open a door and our eyes go to the door handle and we imagine the sketch that generated that handle, we look at the ceiling and all lamps give us the same feeling, we look at the heating elements and we admire the wood shaders designed not to see the heating element but just feel its heat, in every room all windows have designed handles, all furniture design is following the same philosophy in terms of shape, proportions, color and trim.

I spent there 5 hours and it has been a very good experience similar to when I visited in London an exhibition to remember Gio Ponti.

New Book IDRAWCARS by Marrocco and Hubers

Hi friends, thanks to Marco De Masi blog here a new book just published it is "IDRAWCARS" written by designers Adam Hubers & Matt Marrocco.
In this book you will find all sort of info about how to proportion a side view, how to draw a correct perspective, linework and lots more.

Adam Hubers, a designer at Chrysler and Matt Marrocco, an industrial designer and frequent core77 discussion forum poster, have been developing a book to help us to better understand how to translate these objects of desire onto the page. Contents include global automotive brands, global design schools, global auto show dates and locations, reference materials in both print and web format, commonly used proportions and packages, and 100+ pages of templates to practice with. Alfa 33 digital paint is on Emotion-art

 This fanthastic digital paint of an Alfa 33  is on Emotion-art  a blog dedicated to digital art paint about  historical cars most  of which  come from very known Schlumpf Museum in France.

The work is opera of Maxime Pinol a professional french car designer whom has been ispired after a visit to the Schlumpf Museum.

Maxime, driven by his passion, strated his own blog in 2009 painting digitally and publishing his works, today I wanted to write about his excellent initiative because it can be of help to all students facing up car design illustrations and renderings.

What is so good about Maxime's works? Here some key elements:

- composition on page

- dynamic perspective

- dramatic color contrast

- absence of exaggeration on details

- good focal point

- good balanced background

- excellent high lights

- last (the best for me) a sort of free loose style that gives a lot of freshness to the all painting

Hajime Sorayama illustrations

 Hajime Sorayama illustrations feed us during our school time, his illustration and Art conception made us dream and was a great example to follow when we were working on our illustrations.
How many of us tried to learn and copy from Sorayama? I think really many even today, Sorayama's illustration techniques have been transferred on Photoshop and other illustration softwares however I think that the original hand and airbrush technique remains still the best.
To all students reading this post I suggest to go search about Sorayama's works there is a lot to see and dream about, here for you a set of illustrations you could use as examples for your illustrations and art works :

Copic Day with Michele Leonello in Firenze, Italy.

In Florence on the 4th of April there will be the "COPIC DAY" demo and tutorial sketching stage with Michele Leonello and Vera Taccani.

Chuck Jordan dies at age of 83!

Chuck Jordan, the legendary car designer and former VP Design President of GM studios, dies at the age of 83 in his home in California.
Jordan has been a real innovative car designer back when he was in GM Advanced Design studio starting his career as designer, later on he was very close to hiring talented young designers and helping them in their career development.
I personally remember Mr. Jordan when, almost 23 years ago in Art Center Pasadena (I was a student), he assisted to our Pontiac sponsored project presentation and 15 years ago in Torino I had the pleasure to meet him during a designer's night. A friendly smiling person with a great professional background and leadership in american car design environment.

I felt very sorry for this loss we will miss him!

Harry Bradley car design teacher in ACCD Pasadena

Harry Bradley has been my teacher at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena (here one of his famous drawings) and I decided to tell you about him a bit because he has been for me probably the best teacher I ever had.
Since I often write about drawings, perspective, shading, creativity, skills... I think I have to tell you about Harry.
First of all he was kind of crazy guy with a good humor, but most important he really knew how to teach drawing cars. He would sketch with and for us wih his dark and light graphite old pencils (the yeallow ones remember?), he would take a white paper and start sketching in perfect perspective up side down! Got the point?

 Hi friends,
last week I participated to the inauguration of new Transportation Design Dpt. academic year at IAAD design school of Torino. For this occasion I had the opportunity to talk to a big part of new students to explane how to live this scolastic experience at IAAD school, most of all I tried to tell them what I write about: emotions, passions and motivation.
At the end of my speech I have been interviewed by Quattroruote website with Fabio Ferrante with who we talked about what it means to be a designer and how important talent is in our field.

Car designer Dilip Chhabria from India opens up a new Transportation Design School. The objective is to form young talents from India and abroad to become car designers with an excellent program. Dilip Chhabria is from India and graduated in Transportation Design from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena CA, he owns a Design & prototyping firm and matured a big experience in domaine of car design and custom design cars, his company also cooperates with important automotive design studios from foreign countries.

Chris Bangle workshop at SPD Milan design school

After the success of last year's summer course Scuola Politecnica di Design
organizes from July 9th to July 15th another workshop with Chris Bangle.
This year the theme of the workshop is “An Endeavor in Discontinuity: Exterior Car Design of the Future”

This will be a unique design experience and it will allow participants from all
over the world to project and work in close contact with one of the most
innovative designers of the current scene.
Beside the workshop there will be the possibility to visit exhibitions and
design show-rooms to make the stay in Milan even more exciting.

Participation to the workshop is open to candidates who have a degree from schools / universities
of design, professionals with significant experience and skills in car design and companies.

Ideation sketching by Akos Szaz

Akos is a young designer I met at AFAD University in Bratislava during a sponsored project I managed with that school (very good school). Akos was one of those students that improve day by day in a consistent way, by the end of the project he was selected as one of the best 3 students.
I kept on following him and today he is still showing incredible progress, one of the best qualities he has (in my opinion) is the loose ideation sketching technique, it is quick but well detailed and his execution let us see a lot more which is a good thing. In a way looking at his sketches we complete the picture participating with our creativity.

Citycar by Fabien Delval

Fabien Delval is a professional car designer and manager in automotive industry based in Lyon France. He has a blog full of his works and I decided to publish this citycar project proposal because it is very professionally done: good drawing basics like perspective - line work-proportions-body riflections-good details-great focal point on front left light area-cool design-credible creativity-good control of digital technique with no excess-good form language.

This is Fabien's description of his proposal "(2008) Just a little car to make a kind of blend between freshly introduced Tata Nano and Apple's simplicity values. In fact, this apparently inoffensive car hides a certain innovative potential, but this is another story... "
